"I mean this: Pro-rated, considering that this 17-year-old [composer/writer] had spent comparatively few days on this planet, Prom was the best musical I'd ever read."

The Master Builder

a new opera | music and libretto by Derrick Wang
based on the play by Henrik Ibsen

THE STORY

What would you sacrifice to reach the top? What more to stay there?

The luck will turn. I know it—I feel the day approaching.
The younger generation will come knocking at my door—
Then there’s [the] end of Halvard Solness.

—Henrik Ibsen, The Master Builder (play), Act I

Years ago, a mysterious chain of coincidences transformed an unknown apprentice into the superstar architect known as Halvard Solness.

Now, as he maintains his empire by selling the dream of home ownership, he finds himself suddenly threatened on all sides —

by the men he employs and oppresses,
by the family he destroyed,
and by the seductive young woman he thought he left behind.
